Changing the Retail Marketing Landscape in Trinidad and Tobago

NAMDEVCO Farmers’ Markets began in December 2006 at its market facilities at the Norris Deonarine Northern Wholesale Market, Macoya and the Southern Wholesale Market, Debe. The objective of establishing these markets was to link farmers directly to consumers, thereby eliminating the middleman and making fresh produce more affordable to the consumers.

Consumers would benefit by getting fresher, more wholesome produce while farmers would benefit by retailing their produce. The idea was for the farmers to fetch a price just above the wholesale price and below the average retail price.

These two markets showed early signs of success and there was a demand for similar markets to be established in other parts of the country. Other Farmers’ Markets were set up in Diego Martin in March 2007 followed by Valencia in December 2007. Point Fortin Farmers’ Market was added in April 2008 and Chaguanas Farmers’ Market in November 2008.

These markets have now become part of the marketing landscape for fresh fruits and vegetables. They have been able to attract a number of small and medium sized growers selling a wide range of fresh and processed items. Consumers now look forward to visiting these markets for their fruits and vegetables.

Currently, on a weekly basis the number of farmers selling at these markets is around 150 and over 2,000 consumers visit these markets.
