Does Meat Belong in Doubles? 🇹🇹 Rhett met up with his friend, Samantha (@superr_samm), to go searching for answers to this looming question.
The video begins on the greens of the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, where Rhett dives into the ever-trending topic: Does meat—like curry chicken, duck, goat, or ham—belong in doubles? Traditionally, doubles is a vegetarian street food topped with cucumber, chadon beni, coconut, mango, tamarind, pepper sauce, and more.
As it turns out, Samantha had heard about the bacchanal and flew in from the United States to see what the hype was all about. The duo headed to The Original Fat Boy Doubles & Pies, located at 15 Morne Coco Road in Petit Valley (next to St. Anthony’s RC Church), to try his popular Ham and Cheese Doubles creation.
They learned that the idea didn’t happen overnight. It began with adding cheese to his pies, and later, during a Christmas season, the idea to add ham was born. After experimenting with his loyal customers, Fat Boy realized it was a hit—and that’s how the Ham & Cheese Doubles was created.
After tasting it, both Rhett and Samantha agreed that while it wasn’t for them personally, they appreciated how innovation continues to shape Trini—and by extension, Caribbean—cuisine. They encourage viewers to go try it for themselves.
